Background of the Study
Nursing education is widely regarded as one of the most demanding academic programs due to its rigorous coursework, clinical practice, and ethical responsibilities. The workload placed on nursing students often includes theoretical lectures, laboratory simulations, hospital-based practical sessions, and continuous assessments, which contribute to high levels of stress (Ahmed et al., 2023). Excessive academic stress has been linked to poor mental health, reduced motivation, and lower academic performance among nursing students (Jones & Patel, 2024). Stress arises from factors such as long study hours, complex medical terminologies, clinical rotations, and the pressure to excel in patient care responsibilities (Khan et al., 2024).
At the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, nursing students face similar challenges, which may significantly impact their academic performance and overall well-being. The ability to manage workload and stress effectively is crucial for their success in school and in future professional practice. However, limited research has examined the direct relationship between academic workload, stress, and performance among nursing students in Nigeria. This study seeks to explore the extent to which workload and stress influence nursing students' academic achievements, identifying key stressors and proposing strategies to mitigate their negative effects.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing global emphasis on student mental health and well-being, academic workload and stress remain significant challenges for nursing students in Nigeria. Nursing students at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, are required to balance a heavy academic workload with practical clinical experiences, often leading to stress-related issues such as anxiety, depression, and burnout. This stress may negatively impact their cognitive abilities, concentration, and academic performance.
While various studies have explored the impact of stress on students in other disciplines, there is a lack of research focusing specifically on nursing students in Nigeria. Without a comprehensive understanding of how workload and stress affect nursing students' academic performance, educators may struggle to implement effective support systems. This study aims to fill this research gap by examining the effects of workload and stress on nursing students' academic performance at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare, and suggesting evidence-based strategies for stress management and academic success.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study focuses on nursing students at the Federal University of Health Sciences, Azare. It examines their workload, stress levels, and academic performance while identifying coping strategies. The study is limited by its sample size, self-reported data on stress, and possible external factors affecting academic performance, such as personal motivation and socioeconomic background.
